RESUME TIPS - Part Three [next]

How to get short listed for projects.

First you need to understand web based recruitment: hiring managers in large companies or agencies no longer actually read every job application.

Key word searches are used to to process applications: to identify the right skills, short list candidates and reject unsuitable applicants.

Specialized recruitment software now reduces the task of searching for key skills in hundreds of resumes from hours down to minutes.

Key word searches will select only resumes containing the search criteria: this may be job title, qualifications, experience, companies or projects.

This reduces cost and speeds up the selection process: recruiters tend to short-list or interview candidates with the best resumes; not necessarily the candidate who has all the right skills for the job.

Research those key words

You should spend time and effort getting the precise content of relevant key words for your discipline to market your skills & experience.

Time spent on key word research is vital to success: recruiters tend to short-list or interview candidates with the best resumes; eliminating candidates who have all the right skills for the job and who submit a poorly written resume.

COMMON PROBLEMS

One of the most common is the employer cannot open or read your email resume; try using a less complex format to fix this problem.   [sample resume style]

Do it right first time by using either simple text or rich text format; test your efforts with friends, not a prospective employer.

FAX OR POST

Some employment agencies or large companies still scan your posted or faxed resume using OCR [optical scanning recognition] software as the first step.

100% OCR accuracy cannot be guaranteed: to help use a sans serif type face to post or fax applications.

Hiring managers prefer the convenience of instant email access: why risk rejection by forcing managers to use outdated manual methods, email your resume.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

Most employers reaction to any complex document that takes minutes to open will be deletion.

Resumes requiring minutes of precious time to re-format before downloading or to review will definitely go to the bottom of the pile, if not straight in the waste bin.

ATTACHMENTS

Your resume like many others is probably be currently formatted in latest version of MS Word, Word Perfect.

If you have prepared your resume on your company network beware.

Lurking in these files may be hidden problems for other networks: remove all macros, passwords, logos, graphics, columns, borders, company templates, these may not be compatible with other systems.

DOCUMENT SIZE

You have less than thirty seconds to attract the hiring managers attention; don't waste the opportunity to market your skills, edit your resume to four pages maximum

Focus on your current skills & experience; you can supply precise detail on request, or at interview.

APPLICATION LETTERS

You can combine your application & resume in one single attachment; better still write a career summary .

ABBREVIATIONS OR JARGON

You may understand industry abbreviations; we certainly do but the person using key word searches may not, to avoid rejection try spelling out specific words plus still use  abbreviations particularly with any technical terms.
